Are there settings to tweak to improve the camera quality on the default camera app? Or are you downloading another camera app? if so, which one?

I enjoy the Play Store Pixel Camera. It does not require network permissions or Play Services, and you can immediately delete all Play apps after downloading

ranged I think so. Both GOS stock & GPixel Camera fully utilize the hardware to take roughly equal raw photos. GPixel adds a lot of extra algorithmic processing - for example, I've found GPixel's noise reduction to be quite nice.

However, Ive seen others favor the 'truer' photos from GOS camera, so I suppose it's ultimately a matter of personal preference

Quality in relation to what? To answer that seriously, you would have to define what exactly is important to you.

There are some features the Pixel Camera has that the GrapheneOS Camera simply does not (yet) have: RAW support, astrophotography, motion photos, frequent faces, Google Lens, H.265 for video, 4K 60fps, to name a few.

On the other hand, GrapheneOS Camera scores in other areas, such as its focus on security and privacy, automatic removal of metadata, beeing able to use on a degoogled profile etc.

Image look is very subjective, as you have probably already noticed from the previous posts - there is no better or worse.

If I were you, I would simply try out different camera apps and compare results.

What's great is that you don't even have to decide - just get the best of both worlds: I personally mostly use GrapheneOS camera because I really enjoy the natural look. I switch to Pixel Camera where I think it's stronger: for me that's low-light shots and videos (especially motion-stabilized).

Don't bother with GrapheneOS camera unless you're fully against Google.

Pixel Camara is much higher quality works without Play Services as previously mentioned and doesn't need the network permission.

That is an absurd position to take. As has been mentioned, not everyone likes over processed images. You can always apply your postprocessing in POST.

The problem here is that sometimes its necessary to actually voice it when someone like you spreads that kind of nonsense. No, the GOS camera application will NOT produce lower quality images. The image source is exactly the same. What it will do is a whole lot less POSTPROCESSING.

POSTPROCESSING actually damages the image and permanently reduces its quality. Yes you may think it looks nicer with a bunch of nonsense pretty effects added to it, but those effects permanently reduce the scope of what you can actually do with those images in the future.

And like I already said, you can always add those postprocessing effects IN POSTPROCESSING, so you've lost nothing by using the GOS camera application, and gained a whole lot of flexibility in using that image in the future.

I'm an amateur photographer. When I want a quality image, I use a full frame camera, but I do still care about the images coming out of my phone. On my Pixel 7 Pro, the GOS stock app was always good enough for a phone, and I was happy not to have an extra Google app. When I recently upgraded to a Pixel 9 Pro, I suddenly noticed noticed image problems from the GOS camera app. I didn't spend much time diagnosing the cause, but I downloaded Google's own app, and it has been working well.

secrec as I said, the Pixel Camera app produces noticeably nicer and clearly higher quality images. I just tested both and it's obvious. If you're not satisfied with the look of Pixel Camera then simply use another app. The vast majority prefer the look of Pixel Camera.

devil's advocate: many users lack the skill/interest to reach proficiency on photo editing tools. They will never "do anything with their images in the future". These users want/expect postprocessing to be built into the camera application, as has become increasingly standard on smartphones. GOS stock camera may not be the best tool for these users

I only mention this to make the case for different uses of the smartphone camera; GOS already lets different users use the right tool for their situation without limiting options from default, I think that's the ideal solution. I do (baselessly) expect most users to prefer the plug-and-play ease of Pixel Camera, but I am glad the stock camera provides value to the more professional photographers among our base

I often use this for tons of manual settings, but not least for the options to turn much of the processing OFF. Gives a bit unpolished but cosy and classic looking pictures which can be stamped with e.g. date taken (anyone that's ever restored pictures from a failed harddrive know the value of this, I'd guess).
