On January 1, 2026, Google filed a patent for an interesting smartphone battery design that skips glue and opts for a more mechanical way of locking the battery inside a phone using a rigid metal chassis. That new design should technically allow a normal user to dislodge the battery from the phone without puncturing it or damaging it, and replace it with a new one.

How about just returning to a removable back cover, even if it is glued on? The back cover on Nexus 6 was glued on with what seemed to me like contact cement. Just warm it up a little to make it gummy and peel that cover off, then everything in the phone would unscrew nicely and come apart. It was even possible to remove the screen without breaking it because it was SCREWED on.

I would assume that the new fastening of the battery, not using glue, would use a really awkward G@@gle only security screwdriver, that nobody has in their toolbox.

Watermelon When I saw the drawings inside the article I immediately thought they finally did it like it already had been on Fairphone 6. It definitely is the right direction.

Well, I'd be happy if they returned to the point where batteries were the actual back cover, like on modern LMR radios.
