I'm locked out of my phone after an update.

Yesterday, I updated my phone. Now I am locked out of my phone. When I put in my PIN it says it is incorrect. Yes, I know my PIN and I am putting it in correctly. I have a Pixel 8, I got in June 2024 and this is the first time I updated it. I know I can factory reset it but I don't want to lose all my pictures.

Can anyone help?

Did you back up any of your photos previously? Either to the cloud or USB drive/computer?

djil Sorry. 😔 If you want to use the device again, you'll have to factory reset it. Yeah it sucks big time, but that will be the only way back into the phone.

What do you mean it is the first time you updated it? Did you already have GOS 18 months ago, but only updated yesterday? Maybe, there’s a bug due to that?

You say that you’re using a PIN: is it really a PIN, not a password? How long?

When entering your PIN, are you sure that all the inputs are taken into account?

Maybe I did miss something, but it doesn’t make sense to me to factory reset without question when you’re sure of your PIN. Let’s say you had the same six-digit PIN for the last year: it’s hard to believe that you forgot it just like that. Maybe think about something else for a few days, in the case you’re misremembering it.

Or there’s a bug with the keyboard…

Yes, it's a PIN, a four digit PIN. And yes, I've tried the same thing multiple times.

djil if you are confident your remember the pin it seems likely the phone is asking for a different pin to the one you think it's asking for.

Do you have or set a SIM lock pin by any chance? Or maybe confusing it with the phone unlock PIN?
You can try powering the phone, removing the SIM card, and powering on the phone without the SIM.

The only thing that I can think of is maybe I had a different PIN initially when I set the phone up and changed it and maybe it wants the original. Which would indicate a bug in Graphene but that is also just speculation on my part. I've had the same PIN for a long time.

djil OK, I took the SIM card out, restarted and it is still the same.

And airplane mode is still on. Airplane mode was on after the update and was not on before.

Same issue here w/ the Pixel 9a I got just yesterday. I got through the os setup, created and confirmed my 6-digit PIN. Have not done anything else on the phone. There was then a notification to update Graphene, which required restart. Upon restart, I entered my PIN and it says it's incorrect. 110% sure it is correct. I have tried too many times now and got locked out.

I have no qualms with doing a factory reset b/c there's nothing on the phone yet. I haven't even selected a carrier, so there's no SIM. I have followed directions for factory reet, but I either get returned to the lock screen, or the Android "no command" error screen. Receovery mode won't work and neither does Rescue mode...

Obscurity2751 When you're in recovery mode hold power button then press volume up once. That will bring up the user interface where you find the option to factory reset.
