Updating Proton VPN in a Private Space

Hi, I could need your help.

I'm running GrapheneOS. I've got an owners profile (to install apps and push them to my daily user profile). It runs Proton VPN
In the daily user profile I do run Orbot as Android VPN
I recently started to use a Private Space within the daily profile. I run Meta Apps and Google Apps that I don't want in my daily profile. This profile again uses Proton VPN.

While I was able to install Proton VPN in the Private space of my daily profile I'm not able to update it. Google Play Store in the Private Space simply tells me "Error updating".

Am I doing something wrong. Am I not allowed to run Proton in the owner profile and a private space of another profile?

I assume you installed Proton in Owner from some other source than Play Store. It probably either has a newer version or different signature from what Play Store wants to install in Private Space.

I thought there was a way to tell Play Store not to update apps installed from other sources, but I can't seem to find it now.

In any case, it should be fine to ignore. When the owner is updated, it will update the private space instance too.

Also, FYI, GrapheneOS has recommended Tor VPN over Orbot. You may want to check that out.

You only need to install & update apps once, systemwide. If you've installed & update ProtonVPN in the owner profile, you do not need to also update it through Play in the private space

How did you install it in the owner profile? If it wasn't from Play Store, your installed app will be signed differently than the version Play is trying to update, hence the error

I did not find a way to push applications in to a private space of a user profile - is that possible?

I installed Proton VPN by opening the Google Play Store in the private space and installing.

Edit 1: I found you can push from the user profile to it's private space BUT I don't want the Google Play Store etc in my user profile - so that's not an option.

Open the private space -> click the settings gear -> install available apps. This will let you install apps from that profile into the private space. You can only install apps previously installed in the user profile. Apps need not remain in the user profile afterwards

Push Proton VPN from owner to daily user to private space.

You can later uninstall from your daily profile if you don't want it there.

So in my case Proton is installed in the owner profile. Then there's User Profile that has no Proton installed, and that user has a private space that again runs Proton.

Probably9857 Aurora Store has not been able to update apps I've disabled and put in the Private Space. Do you know if that is normal?

Yes.

There is ever only one version of an app installed on a device. Some people would actually like this to not be true. But it can't be done.

ProtonVPN version seems to vary depending on its source which probably is causing your issues:

In Github (and F-Droid) 5.14.76.0 is currently the latest version, while in Google Play Store it is 5.14.87.0.

I had a similar setup and would always run into issues. Unlike you, I was able to install it from Play Store, but then kept getting error messages in Obtainium and couldn't update it from there because Github version was always lagging behind.

Proton seems to be releasing updates on Play Store weeks before publishing them on Github.

If I remember correctly, I solved this by simply ignoring Play Store updates and waiting for the release on Github, then installing it via Obtainium.
