Facebook Lite "Listening"?

Hi, all. Looking to understand how I had a face-to-face conversation with a friend last night about a doctor's medical protocol and then had it show up in my FB lite newsfeed today. This topic hasn’t appeared in my feed in years.

Facebook Lite Setup:

-All permissions disabled except Network (No mic, camera, sensors, contacts, or storage)
-I haven't done any related searches, posts, or engagement about this doctor or his protocol in 2–3 years

Context: Friend does not have a Facebook account

But perhaps your friend did some searches like that? And perhaps you and your friend have been on the same Wi-Fi network at the same time?

The problem is that these companies are really good at tracking social behavior. To demonstrate audio surveillance, as opposed to other forms of tracking, would require careful experimental design, as opposed to normal interactions with friends.

And meanwhile ongoing deliberate audio surveillance by a giant company assumes zero whistleblowers, which is not consistent with existing data.

Big tech doesn't need to actually eavesdrop. They've spent decades accumulating data on you & everyone you know, feeding it into AI & predictive algorithms. They have an unsettling level of insight into your life. They may know you better than your loved ones. They probably know the date & time of your death

The only mitigating strategies are to take digital privacy seriously, limit your use of tech platforms & services that milk you for your data, starve the algorithms

The Facebook app is malware, don't use it. In fact, don't even use the website. Any piece of information that you post or that someone else posts about you will be used by Meta to profile and track you.
