encrypted usb backup for stock pixel and gos?

Friends got stock pixel for now while waiting on a gos compatible phone, and no interest in owning another computing device. Easy enough to export contacts, calendar, signal to a usb drive. Pics are harder to manage.

What method would you use for pics? Any good methods of encryption that work on both stock android and graphene, and would work easily for this?

Has anyone here tried self encrypting usb drives like kingstons ironkey?

pixelfairy Yes, this is how I backup. I use cryptomator via a external ssd ( or thumb Drive ) and just copy over every thing I need using the file app, for example, files > hamburger symbol > pixel phone > dcim > camera ( or where ever you have your photos located)

Also works great for contacts etc, just back up as vcard and backup with the same method.

I guess Im not 100% sure what you mean by 'encrypted backups over USB'

So long as the destination drive is encrypted with something like LUKS, your backups are encrypted. There's no need for specialized drives like the one you mentioned. Any drive will do

If you furthermore want the files themselves to be encrypted with a separate key than the drive itself (though I'm not sure what threat model would need this) you can use VeraCrypt

Neither of these methods are specific to GOS - or android - and should work with any USB-compatuble machine

For pictures specifically, if you're willing to abandon USB & pay for a cloud subscription, Ente Photos is a popular solution endorsed by the privacy solution for their E2EE & security practices

Saw "pricing" on the cryptomator page, thought it was closed source, and clicked away. Don't want anything I can't use freely or read the source to. [edit] seems cryptomator is open source. Will take a closer look.

I've found a couple individual file encryption apps with only a few hundred lines of code, so it was easy to read the source. But not block level. The extra steps of making and encrypting an archive uses up storage space on the phone.
