Not getting Telegram FOSS notifications?

I just missed a rather important event because Telegram FOSS didn't push a notification.

How can I change that? In regular android there was a setting to disable the automatic closing of apps or services in the background based on battery usage, but I can't find it in GOS. Any help?

Would the Google Play version of Telegram work better in this regard?

Carport0593 You can set the battery usage for Telegram to Unrestricted by going to Settings > Apps > Telegram > App battery usage.

treequell Yes most apps from Google Play Store use Firebase Cloud Messaging from Google for push notifications. This requires setting up the sandboxed Google Play Services on your GOS device.

I believe Telegram from Play Store uses FCM but I haven't tested it and am happy to be corrected.
