gristle-cause Fossify messages works ok?
Well it mostly works. Not a bad app but far from finished unfortunately. For example, it does not handle well "reactions". If you send a SMS to someone who reacts with a simple emoji, instead of receiving the reaction emoji, you get a message from your correspondant like Added "Like" to "[copy_of_your_original_message]" which is not optimal.
There's also https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.prauga.messages/ which looks promising for not there yet for me.
The only thing that works flawlessly is the stock GOS app but there's almost no configuration (except the nice "Do not download MMS automatically") and is fugly to the point that it makes my eyes bleed (what's up with the horrible green color that so many Android apps seem to adopt? It's beyond me :-))
Folks in here are pretty lukewarm on the fossify suite, I see a lot of bug reports
These are mostly good apps with good intentions and sometimes nice features but IMHO they are too diversified and try to cover way too much ground :-( Gallery is perfect for my use but it's the only app that does everything I wish without issues. Contacts is mostly OK with some small bugs. Calendar is close to being nice except the buggy "sync" feature which does not trigger a real sync. Phone app lacks a lot of things and as many others don't support "Call recording" and some other quirks. Calculator is a joke, see https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/29556-best-calculator-app/29
All in all, I'm all for the Fossify team and really like their commitment to provide FOSS apps but I wish they would concentrate more on providing featured and bug free apps rather than developing yet-another-basic-app already covered by a bunch of other FOSS developers.
