Does GOS camera have allot of meta data? Could pics from this camera be id'd to my phone if I sent them via email?

By default, EXIF metadata is stripped for captured images and only includes the orientation. Stripping metadata for videos is planned but not supported yet. Orientation metadata isn't stripped since it's fully visible from how the image is displayed so it doesn't count as hidden metadata and is needed for proper display.

Short answer: no.

However, I believe it is possible to "fingerprint" camera hardware based on artifacts in the image itself.

So if someone had an image they knew was from your phone, they could potentially prove that another image was also from your phone.

Probably9857 Dirt on the lens such as a finger print can be used for finger printing.

In 99% of the cases metadata is useful. It helps you identify and sort your own pictures.

Removal of metadata should be done in post processing where needet. Not in the camera app.

As you've made an assertion here can you provide reasoning too? If not the post is misleading and will be moderated. What makes you think EXIF Eraser is better than stripping it at capture?

schweizer What if third party apps access the camera roll, or you simply want to send a picture to someone via a messaging app without post processing? I think not having meta data is a very sensible default.

MetropleX I wrote it, didn't I? Metadata is your friend when you want to manage your own photos. And because pictures can be identified not only by EXIF but also by dead pixels or dirt on the lens ot is dangerous to assume a picture is anonymous just because metadata was not stored during capture.

schweizer we don't make any claims about this, we simply remove EXIF data by default (this can be changed in settings) and you can also toggle geotagging which is entirely a separate toggle too.

We only make technical claims regards those things in and of themselves. If someone wants to take a picture of their hand holding cheese revealing their fingerprints in an image that's their problem and no amount of EXIF removal claims is going to avoid that. Nothing about what we do makes false promises or claims and is fully user controllable. Nothing wrong with the implementation in GrapheneOS Secure Camera.

MetropleX I do not understand why you write so aggressively. I never wrote that GOS would make false promises and I never wrote that there would be something wrong with the camera app. I do not think like that. There are just smarter and less smart ways to use a mobile. Sending pictures to someone who you think is an adversary is a very delicate thing. Generally better avoid doing this. If you have to, post process the image. But for yourself and friends metadata is useful.

schweizer my response wasn't aggressive. My responses while tagged as a reply are not just for you or to you. Other people will read them and they are for clarity and brevity should others see the thread as a resource.

"I wrote it, didn't I?" Is an emotive response when all I asked for was reasoning for an absolute claim that removing exif shouldn't be done in the camera app. I tried to understand you and your reasoning, providing an opportunity to do so rather than antagonise.

You'll see this is standard from me when people make axiomatic statements.
