If what the switch does is configurable by software, then what the switch does is also reconfigurable by malware.

de0u If the options for what the button can do were limited at the kernel level, would it be more secure? Of course, the best option would be for the button to stop the power supply to the camera/microphone. But could it be implemented in a secure and multifunctional way at the same time?

In theory, but there are plenty of kernel exploits out there, especially if the kernel in question was built without hardening.

Honestly, though the quote I pulled was from text titled "Privacy by Design", it looks to me as if this is a convenience feature as opposed to a privacy feature. People often say things like "privacy" and "security", but making it happen is harder. I'm not sure how private a MediaTek device would be in practice, unless they have upped their game with respect to patch latency and completeness.

I think just understanding why Pixels are the only supported device will answer every question about "Will X phone be supported".

Beyond that, it seems that just dealing with one brand of phone is enough work for the devs. They're also looking at producing their own OEM phone sometime later, so I highly doubt throwing in another brand of phone is really feasible.

Even if Jolla used the titan chip like Pixels, there would be so many little differences that I would expect a pretty large workload would come from it.

Jolla doesn't even have global support yet.
