How to copy files and photos to usb drive

Hello, i was referred here by reddit.

im not exactly tech litterate. ive been using this os for a while now, it was recommended to me as something easy to use with no spam. I have years worth of family photos on the phone and ive tried plugging the phone into the computer and the computers dont recognise the phone at all, usb drives show up on the phone but when i try to copy photos over it just says that it couldnt copy and it fails.

Ive taken the phone to multiple phone specialists and they have said that this os you cant copy files over easily or in most cases at all as its basically a phone designed for hackers and government officials with the security level it has, and the chances of getting anything to work on it is slim to none, and they recommend i get an iphone instead as its better for everyday use.

Just wondering if anyone here knows of anyway to go about doing this or just accept the loss and have to look at the photos on here only because i have no idea about what to do here. thanks.

Hello and welcome. Some more information would be helpful—e.g., which operating system you are using, etc.

Basically, data transfer on Android (and also GrapheneOS) works as follows:

Unlock your device.
With a USB cable, connect your device to your computer.
On your device, tap the "Charging this device via USB" notification.
Under "Use USB for," select File Transfer.
A file transfer window will open on your computer. Use it to drag files.
When you're done, eject your device from Windows.
Unplug the USB cable.

Another setting worth checking may be GrapheneOS's USB-C port and pogo pins control under Settings> Security & privacy> Exploit protection> USB-C port. Make sure it is not set to Off or Charging-only. A reboot may be necessary.

Other ideas that come to mind:

Have you tried it with a different computer, a different USB cable, and a different USB port?

I'm no expert, but pretty sure they weren't either ;-)

sd6554df And when transferring to a mounted Usb-device, you should use the Stock Gos Files app to copy or transfer files. Most other File-managing apps won't work.

I just tried with an old USB-Stick that is formatted to exFAT and it worked. So maybe reformat your stick to exFAT and try again?

Also make sure that the exploit protection for the USB-C Port is not set, as the post above mentioned. But I guess if the USB-Stick was recognized this option is already off (default).

An alternative is a site like pairdrop.net. If your PC and Phone are in the same network, e.g. at home connected to the same router, you can use this site to send any file over the network without any setup.

Yes, a Pixel 10 Pro, build 2025121701.

I'm not transferring data on a daily base and can't test it right now, but if I remember correctly, change Settings> Security & privacy>Exploit protection> USB-C port and a reboot always solved the issue for me.
