NewPipe vs LibreTube vs Tubular vs others

Hi everyone, newbie here. What's you fav youtube app and why?

So far I like NewPipe, been on it for a few days, really love the ad free experience.

Can someone share your likes/dislikes of these apps?

pizzadequeso freetube seems pretty good in terms of cross platform compatibility, it's available for Linux, windows, android, etc. I personally use revanced and just disable background usage and network pemissions and it seems to work fine enough. Revanced is sandboxed regardless so although it's not advised here, it's mostly a personal preference of risk VS reward.

I would say use what works for you, I used to use the NewPipe fork and also Revanced and I think they are great (although I think Revanced requires MicroG which isn't recommended here,) personally I've used Grayjay for a while because it's more sustainable and supports multiple platforms so you don't have to rely on any specific one, it also supports logging in to the platforms and includes extensions built in like sponsorblock, de-arrrow, etc.

There's no definite winner, but I also ended up on Grayjay for it's quick update fixes and feature set. Some don't like it because it's source available and not open source or because a certain idiot is part of the team and spreading lies about GOS. I tend to go for best user experience while retaining my privacy and security, which for me is Grayjay for now.

N1b Just checked out Grayjay, it's pretty nice. One thing I can't find is how to watch YouTube livestreams? Both currently broadcasting and past streams. Any idea?

NewPipe for me. The second I tried it, I was like OMG, I wish I started using open source apps a LONG time ago! Like A YouTube premium experience for free. Wow. And no tracking. GrapheneOS has taught me so many things and I'm loving the journey using open source stuff now. 100% recommend NewPipe!

LibreTube looks the nicest but its not without issues. Instances go down all the time causing you to find and input a new one. When it works though it works great, and looks beautiful.

Functionally, NewPipe is the best but it is hideous. Why they though using bright red as the primary color is mind boggling. That said, it works wonderfully, every time. I use NewPipe the most.

I'll always question that too... ;) but your right. NewPipe does seem to work all the time with minor issues.

MEGAbyter LibreTube works the same way as NewPipe with local mode turned on...

MEGAbyter yes it does livestreams you have both a filter (at the top of subscription tab) and a live tab on the creator page. Grayjay also defaults to 1x playback speed for livestreams if you set it higher for regular videos (although that doesn't always work).

However there's often not much buffer saved to the past in Grayjay (sometimes up to 1h, often none at all), so what I do is wait a bit and than open the live stream in Brave Browser at 2x speed and catch up when it ends.

JollyRancher my pipepipe is a bit glitchy, when I search for a video, sometimes the title is wrong, like the title in the search results list will actually be the title for the video below it, or the other thing that happens is two videos in the list will.have the same title but they are different videos its super annoying

I installed from obtanium so I should have the most up to date version

I do like just about everything else, three things I miss coming from the official YouTube app (I was a premium subscriber, still am for a week or two I just canceled) is the ability to comment, although at the same time I don't want to sign in lol, and the ability to jump ahead of sponsors, as new videos may not have sponsor block yet, and i also miss the random suggestions on what to watch, although I think it could be done better than YouTube

My idea I would implement if I could code is a dialog box that says "if you like this artist you may also like..." And people could fill it in, and if you click it videos from the filled in artists pop up on screen for you to browse, cause fuck algorithms, let's have user feedback

Quantum I'm an idiot, I never even tried it in local mode before lol. Gonna give it a whirl for a while and see if it solves the loading issues it had. I definitely think LibreTube is the best looking one so if local mode solves my issues then I'll be using LibreTube primarily. Thanks bud.

MEGAbyter Local mode uses the NewPipe extractor so it should be the same. They would need to wait for NewPipe to update the extractor though if it gets nuked.

I would use a vpn as it connects directly to Youtube.

Quantum Yep, always have a VPN on so I'm not too concerned about Google servers. Appreciate the advice though for sure.

N1b I'm not seeing any live tab, just videos, shorts, Playlists, and about. Is the live tab supposed to be with the rest of those in the UI? I did just notice thigh that the live vids are mixed in with the regulars so they are definitely there.

Edit: OK I found the live tab when I hit the subscriptions button on the bottom of the screen but not on the creators actual page if I'm not subscribed.

MEGAbyter my bad, yes it's in the subscriptions. I must have confused it with the shorts tab on the creators page.
