first time graphene user

I just installed grapheneOS for the first time, I havnt even swapped my sim yet from my old phone, just connected to WiFi and rebooted

Where do I start?

I think I want to keep owner profile completely free software, maybe just app store maybe f-droid too, I dunno

And I want a sandboxed Google play secdary profile, how does that work? Does the apps think they are on the same phone as the owner profile? Like can they see my dialer and contacts and SMS messenger?

Anyways I need a lot of proprietary apps to keep me using the phone, I need Gmail,YouTube, YouTube music, blink, tutanota, banks, chatgpt, PC optimum, PC Express, and that's about it, all my other fastfood apps and shit I can use on my old phone on wifi

So what am I looking for a guide on how to make a user profile? Is a new user profile automatically sandboxed from the phone?

Anything else I should do as a new user?

This is a great setup! This is how I have set up my main Owner Profile. My Owner Profile is FOSS (Free & Open Source Software, and my other profiles are apps I don't trust as much.

A secondary profile is wonderful for this. But do you need YouTube? You should check out NewPipe. Its literally a YouTube client that is like YouTube premium. No ads, you can subscribe to channels, and download videos for offline watching. All for completely free. Here's the F Droid link;

gopher Insted of a secondary profile you may use the private space, its same as a secondary user but more convenient.

gopher Tutanota is FOSS, and works without push services from Google.

Also LibreTube is way better than NewPipe...

I forgot about new pipe,.I'm a YouTube premium subscriber because I had liked the official YouTube app on my previous phone and I wanted YouTube music as well, perhaps I can download YouTube music in my PLAY user and use new pipe mostly in my owner

The thing is I realized I kinda painted myself into a corner when YouTube/YouTube music are my most two used apps, but I disabled phone and text for my PLAY user cause I figured YouTube didn't need to see that stuff, so I basically can't get calls and texts while using proprietary apps, perhaps newpipe is the solution to that

And if I'm using new pipe, maybe I don't even need YouTube music and I should cancel my premium subscription and just run everything from disk, but then I run into the issue of only having 128gb disk

I could Install something like zerotier that I have on my raspberry pi and pipe all the music from my 2tb SSD connected to the pi, but then that's at the cost of my data, it actually doubles my data use because my pi runs off a data sim that leeches from my phones sim plan, I have no home internet, just a 330gb data plan

You can use RiMusic from Accrescent app store (download Accrescent from the GrapheneOS App Store on your phone) to replace YouTube Music. Its a FOSS YouTube Music client and if you really want to you can sign in with your YouTube Music account - never found that nessicary though. NewPipe and RiMusic are working great together for me! :)

Really? Can I subscribe to channels and download videos with it? I may have to give it a shot!

nandohyphen1 Yep. Way better UI too, and overall UX. The difference used to be that LibreTube used piped, but it has local videoplaying now too(like newpipe's setup)

Quantum I gave LibreTube a try - IMO, not my personal favourite. I do like how it works and all, but NewPipe just seems to suit me better. Thanks for showing me LibreTube though. I just told my friend about it and he said he likes it a lot. :)

Quantum I just like the layout of it a little better. I kept LibreTube installed, so I will probably play around with it some more and see, but I'm used to NewPipe's UI still. I do like FreeTube (especially Material You), so I will keep exploring it and see if I like it. Do you ever get the "Content Unavailable" notification that always comes up in NewPipe? If not (or not as much), this might be a reason to switch for me.

Havent used newpipe much for a while. But libretube has or had better messages for why the video wouldnt play. If its your ip or age etc.

99% of the time its ip ban for the vpn thats the problem. I know which servers work for mullvad though. Might also be a country thing or age verification
