I'm moving away from my Duo account. We really only use Mail and Pass. I found it was cheaper in the long run to get the ProtonPass + SimpleLogin lifetime offer and downgrade to the Mail Plus subscription than it was to continue with Duo. It also allows us to keep separate Proton accounts for mail and passwords.

I use Mullvad for my VPN and I've been transitioning to selfhosting my cloud storage and shared calendar with Nextcloud. I never really used Lumo (and I barely use AI to begin with), but I have a Kagi account that includes Kagi Assistant.

brandy078 The issue for me with leaving the Proton ecosystem is cost (that and the lack of trustworthy VPNs with port forwarding). If you use 3+ of their services its hard to find better value.

If I was going to switch I would go back to using separate providers for each service, something like Mullvad for VPN, Tuta for email, and Ente for Photos. For me, Proton Drive is the big pain point. Slow upload and download speeds plus the Photo management side is not even close to competitors in the field.

You're right and you mention good reasons for Proton. I happen to not need IMAP support or Geoblocking, but your mileage may vary. In the end it's best to do some research, test everything out and make an informed decision. I'm happy for every Proton customer as it means less people using Google. Personally I get more out of Mullvad, Bitwarden etc.

I also forgot to mention Proton Calendar, I simply use Fossify Calendar instead with ICSX5 integration, but again that's personal preference just like everything else.

I don't have enough info to help you decide if you should stay or not, because I tried only the free tier, but you asked for alternatives, so I can tell you that Tuta exists.

With a paid plan you get pretty much the same email feature as Proton Mail.
Mind that I am talking only email (and calendars), and I am not considering VPN (for which I would suggest Mullvad, btw.).

Tuta is probably the nearest service tu Proton Mail, but I can add that you should pay for this services only if you care about client side email encryption with a reasonable native app.
I am telling you this because Tuta doesn't have a bridge (like proton) to be used as a normal email provider.

If you need your email service also for other things I suggest you another email provider (truth to be told, also gmail works) and encrypt your important messages yourself (there are some good plugins for email clients to achieve it without actually doing it yourself).

brandy078 Yea, basically all external connections are not possible due to the encryption, you will need the official app for both, emails and calendar.

I know I am getting a little bit off-topic, but depending on how much free time/knowledge/willpower you have, you can selfhost some solutions.

You can find all-in solutions like Nextcloud (even if imho is a little bit bloated) or you can be a little more granular and install a set of services, like stalwart (for email) + radicale (for calendars and contacts in caldav and carddav)

These are just examples and there are a lot more solutions out there. The good thing about selfhosting is that you can fine-tune your services depending on your needs, including server-side email encryption.

I have mixed feelings about Proton. On the one hand, I dislike some of their marketing, which I think occasionally promise too much – such as their initial extreme praise of Proton Authenticator as a secure service, giving users the impression that traditional MFA is phishing-resistant; their delayed release of source code; and seemingly down-prioritizing reports of memory corruption bugs.

On the other hand, they are a serious player in the market of privacy services, and I'd much rather recommend that my friends use Proton over other services lacking in privacy, if that is easier for them than getting started with Proton's competitors in the privacy market. Also, Proton has responded positively whenever I've pointed out problematic statements in their blog articles (such as listing Telegram as one of several privacy-preserving chat services) and corrected them. Moreover, their security team have occasionally responded and fixed issues rather quickly (within a few weeks; much better than most services I know of).

Proton's feature sets are currently fine for me. Proton Mail and Pass have all the features I need and I rarely have any issues with them. I rarely stream things, but I have to admit that the streaming support of Proton VPN is convenient when YouTube would otherwise block me.

I switched away from Tuta after I had a very poor experience with their customer support team, even when several CSRs were involved.

It actually annoys me that Proton doesn't have this yet. I get that the majority of their user base likely don't request it. But still I don't see why a large privacy-focused service wouldn't have implemented this by now, especially as they also market their products (at least implicitly) as Google alternatives.

Thanks to all that shared info above.
Looked and tried all foss email providers but sadly,i cannot find one to beat Outlook365,which has a tons of settings and logging and policies under rhe hood and im actively using for work related.

Using all services from Proton for personal stuff, signed up for trial with Tuta,trialling Tresorit now.
As much as i would try,look,like to move away from M365 eco,i fail everytime.

Proton and Tuta doesnt have the 365's logging,policies,restrictions,filters,alerts and full backend diagnostics. Main point is encryption,i truly accept it but "no one" in my neck of the trees are using the same platform.

VPN,using Proton and Kaspersky ,depending on the needs, but with adoption of rethink,have to get the proxy wireguard-ed from Proton.

And,no offence to anyone,im like paying almost €50 per month for a licence and getting out all of it from the suite. To complain that want best service but not wanna pay a tenner a month is either idiocracy or hypocrisy.
