Olaolaho Which one is better for beat security and privacy? I am aware that wireguard is best for speed but if only concern would be security and privacy what would be the better option? Thinking of linking accounts when using different devices
GrouchyGrape Olaolaho depends on who you ask: https://mullvad.net/en/help/why-wireguard You should rarely take one source as gospel. I love Proton (I pay for nearly all their products), but I find most of their blogs to be "meh" at best.
tango Olaolaho No problem. Their both secure but remember if using open vpn on mobile, it will be harder on battery due to the processing it requires. Another thing worth noting is when it comes to auditing, wireguard is a lot easier to audit as it has a lot less code to go through.
Olaolaho GrouchyGrape You should rarely take one source as gospel. I love Proton (I pay for nearly all their products), but I find most of their blogs to be "meh" at best. That's true but in this case its just a explanation of wireguard and I was actually looking which of the 2 are better or what the differences are and the proton site explained it better if we can believe it. Lol. Anyway anybody who has other ideas of the security and more specific the privacy of 1 or the other I will be happy to read
Oggyo Better in what? The answer depends on the scenario. For example, WireGuard can be easily detected and blocked. Then OpenVPN can be a solution. Or some variants based on WG, like AmneziaWG.
Olaolaho Oggyo Better in what? The answer depends on the scenario. The main concern is privacy. I geuss they both are secure as can be just the linkability of accounts on different devices I geuss wireguard has a extra step to trust or distrust in this case compared to openvpn what is already around for much more years..
Oggyo Olaolaho I see privacy and trust as two different things. And I personally trust both protocols. From a privacy perspective, in my previously given example, OpenVPN may win because the internet provider may find out you are connected to a WireGuard-based VPN and try to hinder your connections. I had a similar case, and that's why I had/mentioned AmneziaWG.
Mikeg I run openvpn to my asus merlin router and the battery usage is negligible for me but I am not a heavy data user. I average 2 days battery life on my 9a with constant vpn connection.
