Preferred network type 5G?

I presently use "LTE only" on a P7 to preclude 3G. My new carrier (Verizon/Visual) defaults to "5G (recommended)" which I would like to try - at least while home - in an attempt to provide higher speed data/streaming (IIUC, 5G has improved during the last year).

If I select 5G, will I also get LTE?
If I select 5G, will I also get 3G (sigh)?

Whom (and how) do I petition for a change? I'd certainly appreciate a checklist of protocols that are selectable - in which case I'd select "LTE" for most situations, and would add "5G" when trying to stream netflix.
