Easier said than done :) Even if I switch banks now, how can I be sure the new one won't do the same thing few months down the road? I’m not aware of any bank that explicitly supports GOS.

But they've gotten really bad and expensive in the last year or so, I might have to switch regardless.

They not explicitly support it but you can chose a bank that has über maked trouble with GOS.

Maybe offtopic but I think the banking system should re replaced with Free (as in Freedom).and Open Source systems lile crypto or GNU Taler.
At least I want to have Open Source frontend clients.

disgrunteled Gonna write in CoBa forum and in play store review and going to send E-Mail to customer support.

That's probably the only thing we can do. I escalated the complaint as high as I could, and basically got a written response saying they don’t care.

If I'd been looking for a bank a few months ago and followed this logic, I might have chosen this one... Their apps worked flawlessly on GOS for years with no indication that anything like this would ever happen.

Switching banks is a lot of work, and before I do it, I just want to be reasonably sure I will not end up with the same issue again at the new bank. Otherwise the whole switch doesn't really make sense.

Open source would be nice and all, but it’s probably not going to happen since almost nobody cares. A bank that does not think it’s okay to dictate which device I have to use privately would already be a great start though.

I think it's not so unlikely that the digital euro could be using the GNU Taler system or something of similar architecture. (It has sender anonymity but they can still tax the receiver)

And also I it could be possible that the FED issues its own US$ based stablecoin and makes it an official payment method.

I really hope for something in this direction to happen cause the traditional financial system is trash for so many reasons, not just because some frontends break compatibility with GOS.

Yes. Everything you do online, like logging in to online banking, sending money, or paying with your debit/credit card in an online shop, has to be confirmed in this app. It's like 2FA. That's not specific to this bank though, AFAIK it's the case with every bank here.

Apps not working on GrapheneOS is a slow spreading disease. Especially banking apps. I feel like every GrapheneOS user needs to be aware that they need a plan B once one of their essential apps stop working.

You know how in the olden days a bank would give you a code generator (hardware token) in which you put your debit card and it creates authentication codes? And if you banked with multiple banks you ended up with several of these devices? But now they're mostly phased out and many banks insist on their app, even if you want to use online banking in the browser?

Just buy the cheapest $50 Android phone you can find (or an old, used one if you get it cheaper) and install all your banking apps on that and pretend it's a hardware token. It doesn't matter if the phone is insecure and doesn't get security updates, the banks just care that it's certified by Google.

Viewpoint0232 Nowadays many banks offer hardware tokens and TOTP calculaters as separate devices. I mostly use them with web access.

Yup, that's how I use Commerzbank online banking. I switched years ago to the separate TAN reader due to the times of testing custom roms and to avoid re-registering a new device for online banking.
