Coming from F-Droid forum, this is my first time attempt to first dual boot, then replace native Android, on Nokia C12, bought last year and used in Bharat.

I want to preserve the present set up for some time, i.e., don't want to remove the native Android OS immediately, but gradually grow out of it.

Would this be possible?

I don't wish to buy a new phone just to test the Graphene OS straightaway. I am aware of the FOSS universe, having used F-Droid for some time.

No. You can only run one OS on your phone (that I am aware of. Someone correct me if I'm wrong).

A Nokia C12 isn't a supported device. You can only install GrapheneOS on Google Pixel phones. Thats it. See

Not with a production quality OS providing robust updates and keeping the security model intact. You don't need it because you can use the sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer to run Android apps depending on Google Play. Having a variant of stock OS would not really help.

Using the device unlocked or with a modified variant of the stock OS would drop compatibility with apps enforcing having the unmodified stock OS with the Play Integrity API anyway. GrapheneOS already provides nearly the same app compatibility as an unlocked/modified stock OS.

It's not mathematically impossible, but the iOS bootloader doesn't include an OS picker, and Android bootloaders also don't, so that covers the vast majority of phones. It would be possible to write a user-installed "OS picker" intermediary OS for some Android phones, but that would cause attestation to fail for any OS that were booted by the intermediary (for example, Google's OS would not validate to Google's servers).

Overall, though phones are computers, phone designers have done a lot of work to support security that the "regular computer" ecosystems have not caught up with (arguably the most secure "regular computer" ecosystem is macOS on Apple Silicon). Reasoning about low-level management of phones based on x86 desktop/laptop PCs will generally not be productive.
