Can I install Graphene OS on Pixel 8 from Ubuntu 20.04 laptop

I have just purchased a pixel 8 and wish to install Graphene OS on it. Browsing through the instructions I notice the supported Ubuntu OS is 22.04.

I have Ubuntu 20.04:

adb --version

Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.39
Version 1:8.1.0+r23-5ubuntu2
Installed as /usr/lib/android-sdk/platform-tools/adb

fastboot --version

fastboot version 1:8.1.0+r23-5ubuntu2
Installed as /usr/lib/android-sdk/platform-tools/fastboot

ssh -V

OpenSSH_8.2p1 Ubuntu-4ubuntu0.13, OpenSSL 1.1.1f 31 Mar 2020

I don't suppose anyone knows if the cli installation should work (following instructions on https://grapheneos.org/install/cli) from that ? Or even if anyone has done the installation from that before ?

Also, although as yet I have only browsed through the installation, I did not notice any specific instructions for connecting the phone via USB. I know when connecting to galaxy S3 and installing replicant I had to set usb config to MTP, but I don't see that option on the pixel - the options I have are:
File transfer/Android Auto, USB tethering, MIDI, PTP, Webcam. At the moment I have it on the default 'No data transfer' - which doesn't sound too hopeful. Do I need to set one of these to connect ? Or does it come out of the box when I boot in to the bootloader interface ?

Almost all Linux distros should work.

Most importantly u need the android rules file

/etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

Which tells ur Linux distro how to handle your USB plugged in pixel device.

If you gave any issues installing GOS, its likely just a package or config issue that is solvable within Ubuntu, u shudnt need anothrr distro

BTW enable developer options within your android via tapping build 7 times

Ok. I had a little play with this. I set usb config to File transfer/Android Auto and enabled USB debugging. When I do that and just plug the usb cable in in standard android mode the device is recognised OK. Booting into bootloader interface and plugging in the usb cable it looks on the surface like fast boot recognises the device, at least I see:

fastboot devices -l

39051FDJH00FMV fastboot usb:2-2

should that be enough to go ahead with the cli install ?

Well that appeared to go pretty smoothly. It's currently validating.

For information - the only thing I had to do was install libarchive-tools (for bsdsdk) and a later version platform-tools, the script requires 35.0.1 or later.

Now just got to somehow find where settings is and put my sim card in and set it up as phone.
