I like Proton Mail. Appart from the web client, the desktop client works well on both Windows and Linux. I too switched because of concerns about where US big tech is going.

Proton doesn't give you the option of running without google services. Even if you use google now, that prevents you from fully de-googling in the future.

Tuta and any imap/jmap email client can get notifications without google play services. Many of which are open source. Theres even an open source 3rd party app proton can look at, https://codeberg.org/angrypixel/you-have-mail . Its clear they just don't want to.

Tuta works fine. Any email provider that uses standard protocols works fine with Fairemail or Thunderbird. You can use addy.io for alias handling.

Nothing against protons other services. Only talking about email.

Tuta from the Google play store does not use Google for notifications.
It's also available elsewhere.
Don't have to have an email client.

I have used proton mail for years. I use to have proton mail plus but now I only stick to the free version. I don't use the version I only access my email from my Linux Laptop.

Johnnyloans Yea, I just hope they fix their Obtainium entry or run their own f-droid repo for de-googled androids without f-droids patch lag. Tuta mail releases often, which doesn't work well for F-droids primary repo.

Got an obtainium file from this forum which works, so it is possible. But Tuta seems confused whenever I try to tell them about this issue. Maybe I need to find someone who speaks German.

Proton Mail uses Google only on Android for push notifications. The push notifications are sent through Google Play services and are end-to-end encrypted (between Proton and the app user), so their content cannot be scanned or logged by Google. That said, Proton indicated they would develop their own push notifications for Mail on Android about two years ago and as far as I know still has not happened. I still have Play Store (not logged-in) on GOS for this sole purpose. Should check to see if I still need it.

anononetwo It's classic Proton to announce a feature and 5 years later it's still on the shelf rotting to never be seen again.
They seem to prioritize building new apps and services over maintaining their existing ones, especially the last couple of years.
