Pixel 5 phone with GOS will be working after extended support ends?

I undersand it won`t be secured anymore, but curious if the phone will remain "alive" so that I could gift it or so
Kinda sandboxed Google services etc will be still usable after extended support ends?

eduard-h There is extremely little chance that you will get hacked with your pixel, but there is a risk. It's like driving a car with an under-inflated tire, something can happen.

eduard-h Official support for the Pixel 5 including driver and firmware updates ended in December 2023. It hasn't been safe to use from that point on due to lack of very important privacy and security patches. Our extended support releases provided updates other than driver, firmware and kernel patches which ended after the release of Android 15. After that point, it received legacy extended support releases with AOSP patch backports which have ended. It hasn't been safe to use since December 2023 and we strongly recommended not using the extended support or legacy extended support releases.

Guila thats true, Im going to upgrade for myself, just curious if current Pixel 5 with GOS can be used as a regular device without issues in future for someone who doesn`t care about security

Guila The risk is much higher than you're portraying. It doesn't get patches for privacy or security issues. There's little point in continued legacy extended support because it causes more harm than good through people believing that makes it safe to keep using it. It's far past the point where it's reasonably safe to use and backporting more AOSP patches won't change this.

eduard-h The only thing that will happen is OS updates will stop. Like any other phone, you can keep using it if you want. the phone won't suddenly brick itself or anything.

eduard-h You can use it, but if you give it do not connect to your bank account or your sensitive accounts... do nothing sensitive with it. You can use it as a dashcam, a disconnected camera or even a disconnected GPS thanks to organic maps. From my point of view if you have to offer a smartphone, rather take an iPhone 12 or a pixel 8a, second-hand they are not "expensive" and we have many years of updates ahead of them

vincente213 The updates already stopped a while ago. It received extended support past end-of-life, then legacy extended support and is now fully unsupported. We could still make another legacy extended support update if we needed to change something related to the GrapheneOS services it uses, but we don't plan on releasing those anymore. It's going to be removed from the web installer, releases page, etc. We just haven't done it yet since we know people will bother us about it and it's better they install an OS which warns them that it's insecure than one pretending things are fine.
