HDMI second display issues

I've been trying to use a second monitor for desktop mode, but the display is super low resolution. I have it connected to a USB hub that has an HDMI port.

When I look at the "external display" under under connected devices, I only see the option to rotate the screen, and the resolution is grayed out at 640x480, instead of 1080p or 1440p. The USB hub is supposed to support 1080p at 60hz or 4k at 30hz. The issue is the same with different monitors and HDMI cables. Desktop mode is enabled in developer options.

If I connect the hub into my laptop's usb-c port, the display works without any problems.

Maybe there's some configuration that I'm missing, but I haven't been able to find any clear answer so far.

NoahRaketic I think the key thing to know is that the desktop code that Google has published to AOSP so far doesn't work very well -- that's why it's in developer options.

It is possible that people here who have 8/9 devices (not me) could help more if more details were provided:

Which brand and model is the monitor?
Which brand and model is the USB hub?

NoahRaketic I have a P9P and have plugged mine in using a WalMart "Onn" brand multi adapter to plug into some projectors for signal testing. They all registered as getting a 1080p signal for me, though the background was a real crappy pixeleated mess. Apps looked fine when on screen, however.

My guess is like @de0u said, it's currently an experimental feature and probably won't work correctly for several OS releases still. If you live somewhere near a WalMart, maybe give their adapters a try, or buy another similar one? Hopefully Desktop Mode will work as decent as, or hopefully better than, Samsung's Dex.
