Update Play Services by Playstore?

After updating the Play Services by the Graphene OS app browser, the play store wants to update it as well. Should I do that? Why? Why not?

Also the Play Store used up 500 mb mobile data this month without installing any apps. It did update 2 apps which are combined 150 mb though, but that shouldve been over wifi, since its not allowed to da that via mobile data. I hope this is fixed with the update from today, but does anyone know the reason?

Flukato The Play Store and Play Services are a package deal, so you'll want to update all three of the Google components if you're using Play.

I can't comment on the background data usage, but hopefully others will have some insight.

Hah, ignore me. I misread your post. It sounds like Google may have just dropped a newer version of Play Services. Even if you try to update it via the Play Store, it should fail. GrapheneOS has taken steps to prevent the Play apps from downloading anywhere except via GOS' built-in Apps store, in order to give the devs time to ensure no issues exist with the GMS compatibility layer.

Once the new release gets the green light, it will be available as an update in Apps.

Since recently, Play Store is used for updates of Play services and itself. Apps app is used only for initial install and for updates of GmsCompatConfig.
GmsCompatConfig defines maximal supported versions of Play services and Play Store, Play Store won't be able to update them to an unsupported version.

If Play Store is unable to update Play services or itself, it'll try again and again after some delay. There's no way to disable this behavior AFAIK. Play services updates are considered very important by the Play Store, it'll try to download them even if auto-updates are disabled and device is on mobile data.
