Android Auto disconnects when car engine (re)starts

Hi,

I have this issue with some cars when being connected with a cable and Android Auto. Many cars turn off the engine when the car is stopped (e.g. at a traffic light). When you continue driving, the engine (re)starts. And in this very moment, the Android Auto connection gets lost. As soon as I unblock the phone screen, the connection gets reestablished.

I have only seen this with Graphene, but I am not 100% sure that it is Graphene specific.

By "unblock" do you mean unlock your phone? If so this sounds to me like an issue related to the USB-C port settings in System Settings > Security and privacy > Exploit protection > USB-C port

If it is set to Charging-only when locked or Charging-only when locked, except before first unlock, then I would suggest changing it to On and see if that resolves the issue.

Note: you'll want to change this setting back if you want to better mitigate against USB port exploits. So it depends on you're threat model.

This is not normal… when the engine stops, auxillary electronics should continue to work off the battery. Is there a different USB port you can use?

The strange thing is, that it does continue to work when the engine turns off, but it disconnects as soon as the engine restarts. As if there would be some very short power outage or something on the port, that makes Graphene disconnect. Had this in several cars trying several cables. I am already using the specific USB port for Android Auto.

although even stock android on different cellphone worked weird

Yes, I meant unlocking the phone.

Thanks for the tip with with the USB-C port settings, that solved the issue!
