Anyone Using Proton VPN Automatically Connect Feature?

I’ve been testing Proton VPN for a while now and overall, it’s one of the better privacy-focused VPNs out there. The speeds are decent, the no-logs policy is solid, and I like that it’s based in Switzerland. One thing I found useful is the Proton VPN Automatically Connect feature. It makes sure the VPN starts up as soon as you’re online, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially on public Wi-Fi.

I’m curious though—has anyone here experienced connection drops or slowdowns when using the auto-connect option? For me it’s been stable so far, but I’d like to hear how it works for others.

What’s your experience with Proton VPN? Do you rely on the auto-connect, or do you prefer starting it manually?

JasonSherman I think that once, year+ ago, it did not come up automatically - and I could not connect to lan or wan; the exact behavior that I want. IF I needed to go online anyway, it is easy enough to do so.

For me, it (VPN) is brilliant. I also like the encrypted cloud storage.

Always use the automatic startup so you don't connect to the internet without encryption by accident. Definitely a good feature.

Proton can drop out frequently if using UDP protocols. UDP is for speed, TCP is for reliability.
Go to settings - protocols - select which TCP you want.
I haven't had it drop out once using Wireguard TCP, great speed.
Please note that proton being based in Switzerland doesn't matter if you aren't using 2 of their servers. One running through their recommended countries on stealth (eg Switzerland) and the second your destination country.
If your countries laws are to backdoor devices there's nothing much Proton can do.

I find that Proton is pretty good on Android except for some reason it is slow to connect on start in a second profile.

Proton on Linux has always been good for me. For some reason, the user interface is entirely different than the program on Windows. If you didn't know it was Proton, you might think it was an entirely different thing.

Proton on Windows... something isn't very streamlined about it. Slow to load on startup, cumbersome user interface.

I'm using always-on and kill switch with Proton. I use Secure Core on my Admin profile but not my user profiles. Secure Core can get slow.

I do like Proton, and I have no plans to change, but there are 2 areas that I wish were better. One is that their client software doesn't seem great and picking faster servers or letting me have them move me to a faster server automatically when I care more about speed. Second, and related, often I just want a new, fast IP from another time zone, and doing that requires wading through lists of servers manually.

Supposedly the Linux app is due for an overhaul later this year, thankfully -- it needs it.

I use Proton VPN and it starts automatically. However recently instead of saying “browsing safely from Japan or Netherlands” it says something like “Japan; Free#11” or “Netherlands; Free#22”. It wasn’t like that when I first installed the app. Could it be a bug in the app or the OS?
