Do the Google Play Services from the GOS "Apps" require Google Play Store?

I haven't looked at the GOS "Apps" for a while and now it's showing me that there is an update for Google Play Services. However i can't update it because apparently it requires Google Play store, which i have never installed on my GOS, but i was still able to install Google Play Services (and Google Services Framework).

Was there some kind of update which made Google Play Store mandatory to update Google Play Services via the "Apps" App?

The recent update to the Apps client just formalizes a dependency that already existed. From https://grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-google-play-installation (emphasis mine):

Play services and the Play Store depend on each other, one will not work properly without the other.

Signing in into a Google account is optional (...)

The Play Store provides many services used by apps including Play Asset Delivery, Play Feature Delivery, in-app purchases and license checks for paid apps.

Play Services depends on Play Store. This is now done properly in Apps so that people don't install one without the other and have things not working without realizing why.

I know this is an old thread, but I have Google Play Services and Google Play Store both installed (using the Apps), with Google Play Store disabled. I've not yet found an app that doesn't work. Is that expected?

Saint Probably. But it's recommended to keep it enabled so it can update Play Services. Can't see a reason to keep it disabled. It doesn't have privileged access and so can't collect any more data than Play Services itself can. It will update Play Services even if you're not signed in to a Google account.
