New Google app developer identification requirements in 2026

I use the Cirrus weather app on my Graphene phone (Google Pixel 7a).

Today, upon opening the app, I saw the dialog screen shown in the image found at the link below.

The dialog contained a button to this web page containing more information:
[https://developer.android.com/developer-verification](https://)

Could anyone shed some light on this? How does this affect GrapheneOS?

Is Google fully in control of open source Android?

Does Google control the GrapheneOS app store(s) or repositories?

I'm pretty sure I don't understand the relationship between GrapheneOS and Google....

rhimbo it's advisable to search the forum first before creating a new thread. Typing "developer verification" would point you to a thread created a week ago with the answer. See: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/26337-android-developer-verification-are-we-screwed

As the screenshot you included states, this only effects "certified" Android devices. GrapheneOS is not a certified Android OS.

rhimbo All good, I agree with you that this forums search function can be tricky to work with sometimes. I've also found Google Dorking helps as an alternative to get better results in your favourite search engine (by typing site: discuss.grapheneos.org "search terms").

It's not relevant to GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS does not have Google Mobile Services and rules for Google certified operating systems don't apply to it. Sandboxed Google Play are regular sandboxed apps and can't block installing apps. Play Protect already exists and isn't an issue.
