Android Developer Verification: Are we screwed? (no, doesn't apply to GOS)

WolfhartDSA

There's interesting new information given by "Side Of Burritos" at YouTube for installing apps from not Google verified" developers:

All cited information is linked at his blog:

Enable developer options by tapping the software build number in About Phone seven times
In Settings > System, open Developer Options and scroll down to “Allow Unverified Packages.”
Flip the toggle and tap to confirm you are not being coerced
Enter device unlock pin/password
Restart your device
Wait 24 hours
Return to the unverified packages menu at the end of the security delay
Scroll past additional warnings and select either “Allow temporarily” (seven days) or “Allow indefinitely.”
Check the box confirming you understand the risks.
You can now install unverified packages on the device by tapping the “Install anyway” option in the package manager.

On the bright side, they don't ask for the soul nor signing with blood ... yet.

What if... Linus Torvalds would change the license terms for the kernel so that it must not be used on devices that prohibit users to install whatever they like ? Needs legal fine tuning ofc, but would it be a way?
And nothing "forked" off the kernel to be included in that ban ofc.

Eudyptula I like your post and i enjoy reading every comments. As a simple truck driver, What can we do in the future for the survival of our Freedom with privacy?

Some say GOS won't get hit, which is good but at the same time i see some negative replies about this google restriction. I'm not a big tech guy sadly but i am an ex-gamer and a little bit into iT.

I hope GrapheneOS will continue to shine bright for many years. I really love my GOS phone and i don't see myself using another OS ever again. I love the privacy it brings, for free and hopefully with my future businesses I would be able to donate to GOS as support.

Is there any chances that GOS will go sideways with Google's totalitarian regime?

GrapheneOS

CryptoKnight It doesn't impact GrapheneOS as explained in the thread.

GrapheneOS

GoSh Linux is GPLv2 which forbids adding additional restrictions. Linus only owns a small portion of the code. It isn't feasible to ever change the license of the Linux kernel to anything with any more restrictions. It could introduce a more permissive license for new code and gradually shift to it, but not a more restrictive one with any additional requirements.

just by curious, no one in this community or IT geek community can come up with another freshly design privacy oriented OS and maybe new phone manufacturer that all of us can slowly move to and have devs join this new movement?

No, that's an awful idea on a security level

Will never disregard someone wanting to do OSDev as a hobby project, but Android is currently the only functionally secure operating system that has an open license. At least by security standards of GOS.

Android is still open source and you don't need to pay a fee or pass a KYC to develop applications for Android

It has been stated here and in all other threads on this topic that GOS will not be affected, and I understand why - the change is a new system component that the Play Store will require, not an AOSP change, so any user profile without the Google Play Services will not be affected.

But to clarify this further: do we know whether using the Play Store and/or Services will continue to be possible on GOS for the time being, or is the assumption that since that new security component will not be there, those will completely stop working? Or do we simply do not know yet until the day the version with those changes will go live?

GrapheneOS

JustGraphing It has no impact on either GrapheneOS or sandboxed Google Play on GrapheneOS. It has no relevance to it. It's known to be a non-issue and we've repeatedly made that clear.
