Volume goes all the way up or down with one push on the button

This issue was super common on my stock Android and its happened a couple of times on my GOS Pixel 6a. When I push the volume up button once, it turns the volume all the way up and vice versa for the down button. I've blasted my eardrums when listening to music with headphones and this happened. It was common like 90% of the time on stock and has only happened 2 times recently on my GOS phone. Can this be fixed? Its quite annoying (not to mention dangerous, since I could wreck my eardrums listening to music). Thanks.

Probably! If i was in your place, i'd visit a repair shop and let them replace the volume buttons.

r134a Do you think it could be the volume buttons though? My old phone was a Motorola that I bought brand new and it had that problem all the time. On my 6a (which I also bought brand new at the end of May of this year) it has only happened twice so far. So its not the same phone that its happened on and this one is still fairly new.

Developer-Dude Oh i thought it was the same phone. Still could be though or indeed i would first observe if it appears only with bleutooth devices connected as DeletedUser713 suggested. If so, perhaps the culprit could be narrowed down to your specific headphones? Especially since u had it appearing on 2 different devices, did u use these headphones aswell on your older phone?

DeletedUser713 no, it happens when they are connected and not connected. It also happens when connected to Bluetooth devices. With my old phone it got to the point where I was worried about listening to music with headphones, so I hope this problem can be fixed. It also only happens if audio is playing.

Developer-Dude while I do believe this is an upstream bug (as you indicated yourself), it can actually be caused by an app that's either setting volume to max or has a bug of its own.
To prevent further incidents, I would recommend to lower the volume with the physical button and check the level visually. If it got stuck at max volume before, it will get unstuck when lowered and show the actual level.

To completely troubleshoot this, I am afraid you will have to disable apps that can control volume one at a time and test it for around a week each in hopes of finding the culprit.

Audio in general or a specific app u moslty use to listen to audio/music. If yes, did u use that app on the older phone aswell? It seems like an odd problem because i never experienced it, and not really saw many reports here about this specific issue, hence im suspecting 'another culprit' atm.

Yes I did. Testing them on an Mp3 player they were fine

r134a it is audio in general. Audio in Vanadium, NewPipe, Gramophone, etc. Happens when playing on the phone speakers, Bluetooth speakers, headphones and earbuds (both wired). Even if I try to adjust the volume on the home screen its done it before.

Yeah that rules out the headphone & a specific app being the culprit i guess. That's weird. Nevertheless, still doesn't rule out a hardware issue though. Could be u are extremely unlucly on that regard, happening on 2 different phones...

Ultimatly it could be though, but i never experienced it and never saw a report here of this issue. In that case i assume more people would be experiencing this bug, and in that case i myself would search the web first with my specific model and this issue to find perhaps more reports about this, and if not perhaps broader. Maybe there is already a report of this on AOSP issue tracker? Did u do this already? If yes, and came across many reports about this which proved to not be hardware, it would definatly increase the 'probability' being a bug.

Developer-Dude Weird, perhaps it is something trivial like being the button 'stuck' once in a while, perhaps caused by dust or a hair or whatever once in a while, maybe 6a's are prone to it being 'stuck' once in a while? If so u probably will find some more reports about it on the net.

r134a it hasn't happened on my 6a anymore. It did once yesterday and once a few months ago. But yeah, I agree with you. I will keep doing research into this as well. My new phone isn't at the point( yet, hopefully it doesn't get there) where I'm scared I'll wreck my hearing but my old phone was for sure. Thanks for helping. I'll keep looking into it and report back if I find out what causes it so maybe this thread will help someone in the future. :)

Well, on the first occasion it blasted my ears and yesterday the volume cranked all the way up at work without any headphones in. So yeah, I was able to remember it quite well! 😅

Is the phone case interfering with the button?

JustBeginnez it shouldn't be. My old phone (Motorola) did it with the case on and off. My current phone with GOS, a 6a, has only done it twice and so I can't reproduce it with the case off (although the case should not interfere in any way). On the Motorola and on my 6a, the volume buttons are firm and push normally and they are not sticky.
