This sounds like the gallery is misinterpreting audio files as image files? No idea what exactly is happening. Check if the duplicate photos also appear in the preinstalled gallery app (I assume they do not).
For now, you should be able to circumvent this bug by limiting the access to a few select folders, where your photos are stored via storage scopes.
