Going from Google Authenticator to Aegis?

So... drank the Kool-Aid this week, and picked up a new Pixel 7 Pro and promptly put GrapheneOS on it. Now I'm migrating various things from the old phone (Moto G-Power 2020) to the new, and one of those is my 2FA app. I've used Google Authenticator for a while now, but was wanting to move to Aegis.

I installed Google Authenticator on the new phone using the sandboxed Play Store, then used the QR code feature to transfer the tokens from the one phone to the other - pretty seamless, actually.

The problem is now, how do I get those tokens out of Google Authenticator, and into Aegis? I started to do the import process in Aegis but it complained that the newer versions of Google Authenticator had started encrypting the tokens so it (Aegis) couldn't import them.

Suggestions?

Hey there! I would recommend reaching out to Aegis themselves to see if they have any ideas.

If not, the best choice might be to disable 2FA on your accounts and enable it again through Aegis.

For sure. I was just checking to see if anyone here had ran into the issue before.

Turns out... it's a standing 'bug' in the github repo for Aegis, and not one with a solution any time soon (involves the encrypted files being signed with keys from the Android store, etc.), but apparently you can just use Aegis to pick up the two QR codes that Google Authenticator outputs just like you were transferring to another copy of Google Authenticator. Very weird that they never actually mention or advertise that, just kind of 'inferred' it from the blurb 'compatible with Google Authenticator' and a mention in passing somewhere on Reddit.

Hopefully this helps someone else out down the road.
