Phone not booting up after battery died

Okay. So:

Perfectly working phone. Brand new.
Working Graphene OS.
Update pings me. Ignore it until later.
Phone shuts down because no charge.
Charge it. Graphene logo comes up for a bit
Get it to 9%
Try to turn it on.
Nothing. Nothing at all.
Been like this for hours. Tried multiple chargers. Phone is dead. Sometimes it shows me a dead battery icon.

TiggyTheTerrible Put it in charge, when it starts showing the first screen ("you are charging a different os"), press power in order to stop the boot process. Wait until charge is complete and turn it on.

That indicates that your battery isn't charged.

In any case, you might try to do a reset by pressing all three hardware buttons together for around 30 seconds. Does the same thing what taking out the battery used to.

Sounds like the first part of the update completed, but you still need to restart the device afterwards for it to complete.

If this kind of thing happens, the device should detect that the update "failed" for some reason and should switch to the old slot, effectively cancelling the update.

Assuming you're not exaggerating, this isn't the OS. GrapheneOS isn't booted up at this point. It sounds like a completely different problem.

If you are exaggerating and you're actually seeing something, like the warning that you're booting a different OS, then push the lock button to pause the booting process there, wait for a while like 30 minutes, then push the lock button again to continue booting.

To clarify, did your phone die while it was updating the OS?

It's worth asking: does GOS have a requirement for a minimum battery level before running an update?

OP - your best bet is the leave it to charge for a some hours and to try again. In the case that the update was borked, you should still be able to reflash GOS once charged up.

Forgot to mention it DID start starting up earlier. I DID get that screen.

I know but you also said that it sometimes showed the empty battery icon after you said you had charged it. But if the empty battery thing comes back then it sounds like it's no longer charged.

In my defense it looked like the latest state the device was in was it wasn't getting to the OS anymore because you said:

If these things are true, it isn't a GrapheneOS issue because you hadn't gotten to the OS at that point. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "exaggerate," but I wasn't sure so I also gave a suggestion in case the device was actually doing something besides nothing like you were saying.

I can understand that you're unhappy because of issues with your device, but please don't get angry at other people because the description of the problem isn't very clear.

Then something else is going on here. Either you have a hardware problem or there's something about your setup that has caused these issues. What you're describing here is not common at all.

But even now I'm not sure what the problem is. You say you've gotten to the lock screen, but that's it. Is the problem resolved? Or can you not unlock the device? Have I missed some detail somewhere?

Have you actually considered that the phone might have been a lemon? Instead of jumping to conclusions that it must be this exotic firmware killing your phone?

Also maybe you're not saying everything here, just to put GOS at blame, to not admit you may have done something sketchy that led to issues... I see an uptick of new users coming here claiming all sort of weird stuff happened to them due to GOS I immediately label them as FUD..

alright... How about not letting your phone die? The last time my battery actually died is 7 years ago. It's not that hard and keeps the battery alive for longer.

You need to understand that it doesn't matter which OS is on the phone, when it's turned off and charging.
That only becomes relevant once you boot into the OS. Everything before that is handled by code that isn't touched by the devs. Like AT ALL. If you have any complaints, direct them at Google for writing shitty code then.

If the system is behaving better now that the battery is charged, that is good news.

It is possible that a safe-mode boot might help. Here are the official directions, but the basic idea is to power the device off, then to turn it on; as soon as the bootloader screen is replaced by the Google logo, press and hold the volume-down button.

That is an extraordinary claim. This is not a common issue. If this was a GrapheneOS related update issue users en masse would be flooding our testing rooms and our issue tracker.

It is always better to come seeking support with less of an assertive position and more of an inquiry based one for a solution.

The notification said to restart for an update, then it suddenly ran out of power and died. I put it on power, but it wouldn't restart. My working theory is the shutdown also triggered the update automatically. I don't know if that's correct, but it seems like something I would check before buying new hardware.

I hit the same issue with Pixel 8a. My phone did got stuck on the Graphene OS logo and then it rebooted.

I used the trick from https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/24674-infinite-boot-loop-after-battery-drain:

press the lock button when you see the warning about loading a different OS to pause startup. Make sure the device is plugged in and leave it for at least 15–20 minutes.

Maybe, just maybe, you should try not to degrade the OS all the time (like in the title when you started this post) that people have worked on for God knows how many hours, to give you FOR FREE?!
All this "buggyness" you are talking about seems like a you-problem honestly.

For actual solutions though: you might try sideloading the newest update to fix the OS, in case anything really has gone wrong.

Based on your experience. Not everyone's has been the same, I wouldn't have been using it since even before sandboxed Play Services was a thing if that was the case and I've daily driven it for over half a decade running the alpha releases without experiencing this.

MetropleX that's good you have that experience, but I have to restart all the time because apps just stop working. Discord especially. I also can't use a lot of normal apps I need, such as ebay or banking. Meaning I haven't been able to sell my old phone.

I'm not trying to drag Graphene but my experience of it has been petty bad so far. And people attacking me isn't making me think it's any good. In fact, it make me think they have the same exact experience.

other8026 Thank you for your thoughtful response. Unfortunately it's not resolved. I managed to unlock it, but after that it's just a blank desktop. No apps. Can't swipe for menus. Won't respond to gestures or buttons at all. All I had was a battery showing 74%, the clock, and the wallpaper. It wouldn't even power off.

I reset it. And now I'm back to square one and it won't power on at all.
