Proton VPN Speed

Setup is Pixel 7 pro, main profile only with private folder use for google needy apps.

Have been using Proton VPN (Paid) for several years now and almost exclusively the secure core connection. Speed has always been acceptable (_100mbps) even though it's throttled considerably vs a normal VPN connection through Proton. This has been the case on stock android on the 7 pro and various custom roms on older phones (Pixel 3aXL, Samsung Note 10 Plus, etc.).

With GOS, secure core is 100% unusable - as if the kill switch were enabled and the VPN were turned off. This very well could be due to something I've done but I can't think of what that might be. I'm now using fastest country other than US which has mostly been Canada. Speeds of _150mbps which is fine but I'd rather be on secure core especially when banking.

Has anyone else experience this issue? What might I check to resolve the problem?

raevero I've been using Secure Core Proton Servers for quite a few years through their official app and since few weeks also through RethinkDNS and never had such issues. Did you try different secure core servers or clearing ProtonVPNs app cache or storage?

I did not, as it was one of the first apps installed and activated after setting up GOS. Will give this a try. Thank you.

Secure core on Proton VPN working fine here. Using a Pixel 8a.

The only benefit to secure core (multi-hop) is that authorities in a country your VPN server is located in can't just seize control of the server and log it to see who is using it and when, because your usage will show as coming from a different VPN server that they don't have access to, and not your actual home IP. It doesn't do anything to increase security the way you think it does and it's not necessary to use it when using banking apps. Unless you needed to make extra sure that your bank couldn't trace your login and bank activity by subpoenaing the VPN provider or requesting authorities to seize the VPN server, but I mean, your bank should already know who you are and where you live anyway.

If you're worried about third-parties possibly being able to see your browsing activity and maybe being able to hack into your financial accounts that way, SSL ensures that even the network provider can't see your details because the connection to the server is encrypted. If you were worried about your banking information being visible in plain text through the VPN and being visible to someone who might have compromised the VPN server, multi-hop wouldn't guard against that. In fact, it makes it worse, because any potential unencrypted connections are going through more than one server instead of just one (meaning instead of trusting only one server, you have to trust two.)
