SIM settings greyed out in airplane mode

The SIM settings are greyed out in airplane mode.

Is this needed? This is annoying. I do not want to be unable to change SIM settings if not in airplane mode.

If the settings can't be done while in airplane mode, can't the area just state something like "Pending changes" and list them?

I also can't even view these settings in airplane mode. It's frustating.

tobyphene working as intended. It deactivates sim so you can't change any relevant settings.

My understanding is that in airplane mode the cellular modem is powered off. It would not surprise me if the eUICC chip is powered off as well.

It's the default behavior on AOSP, so it's unlikely to get fixed. That said, the restriction is purely in the user interface. I have it patched out and everything mostly works fine.

It doesn't, because if you have wifi calling enabled, it'll continue to work, even if you rebooted the phone (which should presumably clear any existing IMS sessions).
