Airplane Mode with Activated SIM, Anything Sent Outside VPN?

I have an activated SIM with WiFi calling off. I know I can get texts to the SIM. Does that arrive through the VPN or outside the VPN? I would like to know if that leaks somehow if connected to a router.

Leak what exactly? If you don't use VoWifi nothing is transferred via network.

SMS never goes through a VPN app. SMS over WiFi uses its own VPN tunnel between your phone and your carrier. Your carrier will know your real IP address, if that is your concern. To prevent, you would need to also disable the SIM (or WiFi).

This does not apply to VoIP apps, or non-sms messenger apps like Signal, WhatsApp, etc. Those are all using your VPN.
