GrapheneOS Material 3

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using GrapheneOS for quite a while now, and we really appreciate its focus on privacy and security. But as someone who also enjoys a polished UI, I can’t help but wonder: Will GrapheneOS ever adopt Material 3 theming or update its launcher?

GrapheneOS already follows Material 3 theming.
It follows whatever is in stable Android which is currently 16 and that includes Material 3 You.

The big redesign that has been announced and shown is called Material 3 Expressive. That will be included whenever Android 16 QPR1 comes out of beta and hits stable.

Not sure if you're aware or not on how Android updates work but Material 3 is currently in the QPR1 beta for Android 16. Since it has yet to be released to stable, it has not been added to Graphene. Once Material 3 has been pushed to public and stable it will be added to Graphene.

Sounds to me like the Launcher (and Files) is something that is being left to the "active development of AOSP", unlike Phone, Messaging and Contacts. Maybe I'm wrong.

GrapheneOS did add a 4x5 app grid option to the launcher earlier this year. I imagine they are open to the idea of adding other features provided it doesn't burden the team.

Some of the stock apps are inherited from AOSP and do not follow the theming. The project is aware of this and they plan to overhaul or replace the apps. You can see other stock apps that are developed by the project like Secure Camera, Info app, App Store, and Auditor, all follow Material 3 You.
