I'll just put my two cents in... It's been months since my phone has charged to 100%. Last time I remembered it recharged to 100% was April or May.

If not, I'd recommend doing it manually

Battery stats and current capacity in my phone is pure guesswork.
I have just checked my battery usage and it shows a blank grid covering Sunday and Monday. With no app use age at all. Yet battery is at 85% since last full charge. Given this chaos, how does the system evaluate the 80% charge cut off. The phone seemingly has no idea what is happening regarding the battery. I charge it how I want to, which has worked for years..

DeletedUser396 I would add that I have two GOS phones, both pixel 8s. The newer one is a demo phone(shown in stores) at 150 ish charges, kept only at home with wifi and airplane mode on. My other phone is 2 years old, bought brand new. It's at 350 charges and is my main everyday phone.

The demo phone has a way worse battery. It drops from 100% and downwards probably 10 times faster than my main phone. Now ofc there is a difference between charging up to 100% and staying at 100% where a demo phone would be kept at.(Just a note for others, it should be "safer" to buy a demo phone now as they're kept at passthrough charging in the stores now, if updated.)

Li-Ion batteries do not like being kept at 100%. Why would all the phone brands and EV makers introduce a 80% limit or starve off the last 20% until right before you need it...

Seems like my other GOS phone is charging past 80% too so it's probably fixed now

Quantum Can you please test what I said before saying it's fixed? Wait for a calibration to complete, then reboot and see if it forgets the calibration, then wait for the calibration to complete, reboot again… and so on.

Watermelon I did just test it, and it would seem like its calibrating again. I mean technically it's fixed, but has fucked something else to make up for it.

Maybe the phone's being a good boy making up for lost calibrations?

You just asked me to test whether it would start calibrating again after it has calibrated and rebooted. It started to calibrate again.

In the next part I'm just talking about the phone calibrating again in general, but that it has figured out how to fuck up that now.

Quantum I tested again. After calibration was done at 100%, I noticed how the battery naturally depleted to 80% and stopping there. All of this is expected. I disconnected and reconnected to charging and it stopped at 80%.

So I disconnected from charging, waited until it depleted to about 50%, rebooted, waited at least two minutes, rebooted again, didn't notice any fluctuation in battery charge compared to before rebooting, and reconnected to charging. It's now calibrating AGAIN. I'm past 81% now.

This is worse than how it was before, now the 80% limit is broken which is worse for the battery than how it was before.

because humans are involved in the chemistry of batteries through charging and discharging, and humans don't necessarily do what is sensible for batteries. Because they are lazy and just plug it in and go to sleep.

Charge the battery to 100% then remove it from the power outlet, job done. Use the phone as intended.
Served me well with my P6a working impeccably and built in June 2022. It will probably get me to its EOL date, with ease.

I have found a maneuvering to temporarily prevent the repetitive calibration (at least for my pixel 8):
If the phone remains charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled,

Let it charge slightly beyond 80%, for example, to 83%,
Unplug the usb cable, disable charging optimization, and shutdown or reboot the phone,
Boot the phone, and plug the usb cable to charge (probably with data communication),
Finally, enable charging optimization.
BRFORE
Now you would find the shield icon appear and charging stops. At this state, disabling charging optimization would resume charging, and enable charging optimization would stop charging, BEFORE unplugging the usb cable, as doing so may revert the phone to the "charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled" state, until it completes a fully charge to finally stabilize the "charging optimization" state, BRFORE the next reboot.

vawtair I didn't really follow what you were trying to say in the paragraph after step 4. Are these instructions or just general information?

I did try turning off charging optimization, reboot, plug in charger, then enable, and I see the shield when above 80%, and the phone doesn't charge. However, that only works temporarily. Next time I unplug, and plug in again, it wants to charge to 100%.

I've now left it to charge overnight 3 nights in a row where it would have sat for hours at 100% and it doesn't seem to be calibrating. Today, also, after having charged overnight to 100%, if I don't do the above steps before plugging in, it still wants to charge to 100%. Rebooted numerous times. It's currently sitting on my desk at 86%, plugged in, with charging optimization enabled, and it's trying to charge to 100%.

Might be coincidental, but only started happening directly after 2025090600.

I assume that on the current version (2025090800), the calibration result generated from a fully charge does not survive beyond reboot, making the OS insisting on generating one to stabilize the "charging optimization" state.
