phonehelp On my phone I almost always have VPN activated. I'm wondering if it is possible for me to turn on the hotspot and have connected devices also go through the VPN.
DeletedUser495 phonehelp they will have to have their own VPN connection set up, they bypass host device VPN
nandohyphen1 phonehelp I don't think that it works. :( I frequently hotspot and have a VPN on each device. If I go into settings on the hotspotted device, it says there is no VPN connected. But I'm not 100% sure, so wait and see what others say. ;)
GrapheneOS DeletedUser495 There isn't a device VPN but rather an Owner user VPN used for the system services considered to run as Owner. Other profiles and devices use their own VPN configuration by design.
Viewpoint0232 It would be nice to have a list of stuff that's NOT going through the VPN. From memory: hotspot cellular call/sms going through wifi captive portals when connecting to a public wifi other Android profiles (work, private, multiple users) unless they run a VPN as well
GrapheneOS Viewpoint0232 Android has a per-profile VPN device. Other profiles and devices using their own VPN configuration is not anything bypassing the VPN. Connectivity checks and the captive portal handling app are a special case marked as bypassing the Owner user VPN by the OS. Wi-Fi calling/texting is based on an IPsec VPN to the carrier which is why it's another special case.
