Getting past the start screen in the Transcribro app

Installed the Transcribro app from Accrescent and worked through the start screen instructions, including the instructions to select voice input. However, the "Open settings (Navigate to System > Languages > Voice input)" button remains highlighted and I cannot move beyond the start screen to actually be able to use the app. In Android 16 the navigation differed slightly (System > Language & region > Speech > Voice input, where "Transcibro Speech Recognition Service" is selected and is the only option. On-screen keyboard shows the Transcribro toggle as selected and microphone is allowed for Transcribro only while the app is in use. The app remains in this state (start screen incomplete) even after a device restart.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next, so hoping for some suggestions. The comments in the following thread hint that SherpaTTS may be required, but since Transcribro is only STT, I'm not sure what to make of the comment: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/21780-tts-and-read-aloud/9

elih Hello. I think there might be a misunderstanding here. Transcribro is supposed to be used by opening it as a keyboard. Go to any app where you can input text, then use the button for switching between languages/keyboards in the bottom-right corner (the globe icon) to select Transcribro.

That's not working for me either. From the keyboard when I click the microphone icon it just starts flashing Transcribro really fast.

Just discovered that Transcribro uses AI under the hood. No thanks.

We had perfectly capable voice-to-text software available for YEARS before AI. It was private, local, and accurate. Tech is finally in a place where everyone can have one in their pocket but, apparently, we have to burn our only home to the ground just to send poop-emoji's without typing now.

AI is amazingly good for some specific things. Everything else can be done BETTER in other ways - without feeding entire economies and ecosystems into it's maw.
