Push notifications not working, other oddities

Hello everyone, been playing around GOS for 3 days now, and have some issues I hope someone can help with. I have been searching online pretty non-stop since they're very annoying.

First one is RCS. I tried pretty much everything that was posted in this enormous thread, and phone still stuck on "setting up"

The other thing i have noticed is that proton apps are not pushing notifications, particularly calendar and email. The odd behavior here is that when I open the email app, it takes a second or two and then all new emails are loaded, but I still dont get notified of the new emails.

I have opened a case with proton and hoping to hear from them soon, I have also gone and uninstall the app, reinstall and make sure push notifications for everything are enabled. The same for proton calendar.

Other apps like google messaging and the car app (the one that lets you remote start, lock doors, etc) are also not sending push notifications.

Ive gone thru these videos (one of them old, admittedly) just to double check my settings.

Any ideas are greatly welcomed and appreciated. It's been a frustrating start to this journey but not giving up yet.

EDIT: also, I keep getting notified several times a day that the os is up to date and all apps are up to date. How do I disable that? Its very annoying.

Proton requires FCM via play services to give notifications. Although, in the last month I've had issues getting notifications from anything that uses FCM even with play services installed.

I haven't found an answer or anyone else with the same issue yet. If you're going across profile make sure in user management it is enabled to send notifications.

thanks for the reply. I do have fcm/play services enabled with network and notifications allowed, all others are disabled.

new-graphene-user I've had this exact issue, what worked for me was a full uninstall and reinstall and letting it prompt for the notifications permission again. Sometimes the FCM token gets invalidated after an update and certain apps don't automatically check FCM token validity upon app startup. I know reinstalling is a pain but it should work if it's FCM token based.

Byteang3l Full uninstall of what exactly, the apps not responding to pushes? I noticed that my doorcam/doorbell (eufy) isnt sending notifications either, same from corporate apps like Cisco Duo.

Here's my current scenario:

google play store fully disabled and stopped
google play services (which is now 1gb, no idea how): network and notifications enabled, everything else disabled. also have modify system settings allowed, everything else (hardening, exploit protection) set default.

Can you share how yours is set up?

Do I download the apps from the google store, from NeoStore or Aurora?

new-graphene-user you didn't specify so before it would've been the proton apps, but now your best bet is checking if sandboxed play services have unrestricted battery usage or not, and if they do goto apps, show system, scroll to gmscompat, hit force stop, and notifications should flood in.

thanks for the reply. So after running and testing all, its only the proton apps, cisco duo and eufy doorcam/ringer that dont get notifications.
i checked sandboxed gplay, battery use is unrestricted, modify system is allowed, permissions are network and notifications. I changed battery to unrestricted on gmscompat, hit force stop and restarted the phone.

Gonna reinstall all those apps. Gonna try it from the aurora app since i got google messaging working with rcs with the app from there.

Your trick worked! Thanks. I uninstalled the apps, re-installed it from aurora, went thru the prompts and gave it the permissions it asked for, gave gmscompat unrestricted battery, and after a reboot of the phone, all is happy now.

new-graphene-user no problem, this happens on other android builds as well. It's mostly an app based issue because they don't verify the FCM token and the end user has no way of knowing notifications aren't working until they notice the absence of them, which for certain apps like home security and the like can have significant consequences.

Confirmed that this worked for me, but note:

That I hadn't thought it worked after a lot of trying, but then after some time I mysteriously started receiving notifications. So you may need to wait some time.

Installed Google Play Services/Store from App Store in a "Shelter" work profile
Set the Google Play Services app to battery unrestricted
Gave GmsCompat unrestricted battery and force stopped it
Rebooted the phone
Re-installed apps not getting notifications from Aurora, gave them permissions they asked for. Set to battery unrestricted
Rebooted the phone
