pixel 8a battery draining quickly

hello all,

i have used grapheneos for several year and on several phone. currently using a pixel 8a. no google services at all. i notice my phones battery drains very quickly, like 10% an hour when doing nothing. much faster when using it. like it drops 7% on a 20 min drive while listening to plexamp. could someone point me in the direction of how to figure out what is causing this drain. i am guessing it is some app or something. is there a best practice for figuring this out? like charge to 100% and then just leave it alone? thanks in advance for any help.

Hopefully someone will jump in with something better, but I would start by checking Settings -> Battery -> Battery Usage and see which app(s) are using up the battery. Also use the drop-down to check which systems are using battery.

I have an 8a myself, with Signal installed, and the phone uses about 1% of battery per hr when doing nothing. No Google anything.

so I see in battery usage when switched to "system" mobile network is way higher than others. from 620a until 1200p today it shows 78%. is this expected that it uses so much more than anything else?

Just checked my phone and Mobile Network is showing 61%.

It appears the Apps add up to 100% and the Systems add up to 100%. Confusing, until I selected Apps, then scrolled all the way down, at the bottom of the Apps list is Systems Apps. On my phone Systems Apps showing 21%. So I'm guessing Mobile Network used 61% of 21% of the total battery used. That comes out to 12.8% (61% * 21%) of the total battery used. Still a bit confusing, but I think I get it. Also indicates that the Mobile Network really did not use that much of the battery despite the high percentage showing.

okay that makes more sense. my system apps are at 16% and mobile network is at 74% so .74x.16=11.8%

that is pretty close to yours. so must be okayish.

what should i be getting for screen on time? like what is reasonable?

pinetree_raccoon If you mean how to increase the battery life during the day, then you can try to use Wifi more often. This will result in a slower discharge, due to the modem's characteristics

Try restricting background battery usage for apps in which you don't need background functionality.

Molly should also be more battery efficient than Signal when you don't have play services.

If running multiple profiles, multiple profiles running simultaneously also uses more battery.

On a pixel 8a running stock android, I've observed poor battery life when keeping WiFi and Mobile Data always on. This happened when at a certain provider that at that time didn't offer WiFi calling and the pixel showed LTE when using data. On another provider with WiFi calling and showing 4G, the battery life was much better.

krysor are you saying to turn off the wifi switch when not actively on wifi? my provider is tmobile.

Just sharing my anecdotal experience.

I've observed a correlation between the provider, signal strength in the most commonly visited places, absence of WiFi calling, 4G vs LTE and battery life. Any or none of these might be actual factors.
