Even if it didn't require Google wallet, I'd still avoid installing their app. At the very least, I'd keep it locked away on a separate profile with a VPN always running, keep the profile off in the background, and remove as many permissions as possible from the app. I do the same with other apps that I'm required to use that don't deserve a place on my phone.
As far as banking apps, that's old news. The significant majority of apps run just fine, especially with sandboxed play services running in that profile. I still can't figure out why people need these apps installed in the first place when they can just login with the browser... Nor do I understand why they would want such sensitive financial access so accessible on a device they take everywhere and that can be so easily lost or stolen.
