PIN code and startup

Hi, when I start my phone I see the Google logo, then the GOS one, and after that I see my lock wallpaper and the login screen asking for my PIN code.
Why don't we have to enter our PIN before the system is even able to access our files (the wallpaper in this example)?
With my previous phone I had to enter my PIN code at startup (black background) and then a second time on the lock screen. Did I miss something?

I believe its a case of GrapheneOS not having a boot password, but either way its not a concern because your device is still Before First Use (BFU) until you unlock after a bootup, which means everything (except the lockscreen wallpaper, I suppose) is encrypted.

Alan_the_coder what was your previous phone ?

I know that Samsung or LG use secure start-up. I don't know how good it is in protecting DE storage space but it's not part of AOSP.
