Switching VPNs / Tailscale

Hey, so I decided to use an older phone in the interim while waiting for the pixel 10 to launch and get support for grapheneOS. (Don't worry, its still officially supported, so not that old).

Anyway I was setting up my VPN of choice as always on, but I run into a problem when I try to use a 2nd VPN.

Basically, I want to use Proton VPN most of the time, but sometimes I need to connect to Tailscale so that I can access files on my home network while away.

Unfortunately I am running into an issue that if I have Proton VPN set as an always-on VPN, it prevents Tailscale from connecting. I could "just use" Tailscale with an exit node all the time, but that exit node is still linkable back to me, sort of defeating the purpose of using a VPN.

Anyone have a potential solution? I suppose I could just turn off "always on VPN" and manually switch as needed, but I'm hoping for something more elegant.

You can use tailscale in the private space in your profile, each space has its own vpn . I use it like that with mullvad and protonvpn

Could you set up proton VPN on your exit node? Alternatively if you don't need to stick with Proton, tailscale does offer the option to use Mullvad exit nodes:

I could use mullvad, and that likely would have been easier, but I'm already paying for Proton's suite so it makes more sense to try and use that.

For those who may stumble across this post in the future, I came up with a solution.

I came across a VPN connecting Docker Container called Gluetun. I was able to set this up to run on my UnRAID server with ProtonVPN without too much difficulty and connect Tailscale to that docker container.

It looks like Gluetun is fairly well maintained and it can even work on a Raspberry Pi. (It does need to be run on Linux).
