Switching release channels

I'm using a Pixel 7a. I checked "Check for update" with Android 15 and get the info there is no update available. After this I changed the release channel form stable to beta. After this I checked for updates again. Download was started. After this I changed back to stable.
Only with this step I was able to install a newer version with Android 16.

It is without problems possible to switching between release channels e.g. from beta to stable to get a valid stable version? Can I check which release channel version is actual running on my phone?

There is no difference in version between channels. Simply when the versions are received. As long as Stable is selected then the next update will be installed when it reaches the stable channel.

And yes, it is fine to switch between channels.
