GOS increases overheating?

I'm seeing a trend of phones overheating more when using GOS compared to standard android.

I had GOS on pixel fold which was fine for first few months, but then started drastically overheating randomly until I got tired and moved over to a pixel 7a that always worked fine on android.

After moving GOS and apps over to 7a, I found the pixel fold was cool as a cucumber and the pixel 7a started overheating with warning messages of overheating.

The common point was GOS being installed when overheating increased, and removing GOS reduced overheating issues.

I can see other posts on this point, so is this something GOS developers are aware of?

lawman It's possible the differences in heat were because of your setup or there may be other factors you're not considering or some other explanation. I cannot imagine how GrapheneOS would make phones hotter. Both the stock OS and GrapheneOS are based on AOSP. If anything, you'd expect phones running GrapheneOS would be cooler.

I personally have never had a problem with my phones being too hot without reason.

lawman for clarification, by overheating do you mean they're getting warmer? Or they're getting so hot they show a warning and won't charge or open apps until they cool down?

other8026 - i think the issue might have been SimpleX messenger which seems to be transferring huge amounts of data even when not being actively used.

Its also worth considering that it is now summer in the northern hemisphere (where most GOS users will obviously be living), which means more heat and less cooling. Just sitting in the summer sun can cause a phone's temperature to rise substantially, even when totally inactive.

Now there are ways where running GOS could make your phone run hotter due to increased workload as compared to factory OS. In particular, there are some applications that will use gservices for push notifications, but have absolutely horribly bad fallback implementations that will constantly poll a server, so if you're running g-free with any of those, you could end up with increased power consumption and heat as a result.

I only had an overheat warning once and I happened to get sunburned the same day 😉. I was recording outside during the summer with a black OtterBox case so your case and its color might be another factor.

The only reason I could see GOS overheating over the stock is leaving apps running in the background for PUSH notifications without having G services installed.

Also, all the Pixels before 9th generations had negative reviews regarding their overheating in simple tasks in warmer regions. On Stock, Google fights it by under-clocking CPU using AI core or smth like that. I remember forum users installing it on GOS and seeing improvements only within margin of error.
