Constant shut downs and rebooting during "Finishing system update"

I have a Pixel 8 and once in a while it seems the system update gets hung.

My best guess as to what is happening is something kills the battery ad the phone gets hot, perhaps the updater itself, and when it tries to come back, it keeps crashing while trying to finish the update.

I have to force restart countless times until, I am guessing, it gets far enough along where it finishes.

I am experiencing this for the 2nd time right now and I am at the point where, instead of shutting off, it locks up for a while then reboots again. But sometimes it shuts down instead of reboots.

Besides saying "ok don't do that", is there any solution to this problem? It is obviously disconcerting to not know if your phone is going to come back from such a state or not. Thanks.

It's likely not getting stuck, it can just takes a long time.

There's no indication of that. You seem to be repeatedly interrupting it instead of waiting for it to finish.

Don't do this anymore, wait for it to finish.

Not really clear what you mean by this. It's not consistent with what was said earlier where you imply that it's you rebooting it. If your device is rebooting or shutting down by itself, this is a hardware failure and it needs to be replaced.
