New to Graphene OS - Getting no Play Push notifications from Apps

Hmm... out of nowhere, my notifications suddenly started working. @Cyanide77 - Any chance you are experiencing the same?

NewBee hey.. Nope no change here today checked and 6 mails in inbox, no notification from protonmail.

NewBee It's meant to be that way and definitely works fine. Did you grant Unrestricted battery mode to Play services when requested? Did you revoke Network for either Play Store or Play services? That would break it. Battery saver or data saver modes can also be the source of issues.

So into day 3 of GrapheneOS and while loving it, the lack of working play push notifications is a little annoying

Apps I've installed via play store that:

notifications do work (guessing these apps don't use play push???)

WhatsApp
Nine folders (365 email)
Ubiquiti Unifi Protect (CCTV alerts)

Notifications don't work

ProtonMail
VictronVRM
Microsoft Teams
Cloudya (nfon) work VOIP app - doesn't ring

Unknown

Signal (yet to get a message as so unfrequently used by my contacts!)

Everything else seems fine messages/calls

I've today changed to beta channel and updated to
https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/23462-grapheneos-version-2025062700-released/11

Still no push notifications, I've found that the victronVRM (solar controller app) has an option for sending test events.. I get the emails, but no app notifications from either protonmail or the vivtronVRM app.

Really want to stick with graphene but out of ideas to try now!

and just wiped & reset the device from web installer just to be sure

steps:

wipe device, run updates etc
install play / service - set battery to unrestricted
sign in to play
install protonmail/victron apps
trigger a notification
reboot
retrigger alert

no push alerts

as a test also installed on my old pixel 4, same steps as above, NO push alerts

(about the only difference i see between them is the old pixel 4 has google services framework)

Cyanide77 Is this true on all networks, or just one Wi-Fi network, perhaps a home network? Sometimes people have a content blocker on a home network that blocks notifications for some apps.

de0u thanks have tried on my home WiFi/(I do run a pibole so can see any blocks) & purely on mobile data.. same issue.
So doesn't appear to be DNS or connection related .

New user ..Installed GOS with no problems on Pixel 9, but I cannot get any push notifications despite using Fdroid, Aurora, GPS, rebooting and enabling all notifications for all apps that I need to send notifications. Protonmail & Tapo camera app. Updated from GPS, rebooted and no change. I want to dump IOS & like the GOS features, but if I cannot get notifications, it may be a deal breaker.. Any help would be appreciated..

Hi sorry I forgot to post back .. No matter what I did I couldn't get them working... I wiped/reset the device and configured again and they just worked

And still working fine to this day.

Cyanide77 About 4 wipes and reinstalls.. Last time I unlocked the bootloader & did a total fresh install, only installed GPS & Protonmail... GPS is unrestricted, all notifications are active and still nada.. Very disappointing. A few years back I had a Pixel 6A and ran GOS but can't recall if I used / needed notifications... Frustrating..... Grown to not liking Apple...at all... most of all IOS 26.

Cyanide77 Weird stuff... After wiping and reinstalling GPS, there's no difference.. What I did see that the phone , Pixel 9 updated to Android 16.. Don't think that's an issue but I'll keep playing until either it works or I get fed up..

Are you running any kind of firewall or ad blocker on your router/network? Have you tried using a different network?

Probably9857 When I load Protonmail via GPS, I see the same thing as on my iPhone & Macbook, just no notifications.. Same as Tapo camera app.. All on the same network. Only issue is with GOS & notifications.

Yes, but the notifications will be coming from a Google domain, not Apple.

I know it didn't help for the previous poster, but I really think you need to try a different network. Can you switch between mobile data and WiFi? Or go to a coffeeshop or McDonalds or something?

The push notifications come over a network, so if there is a problem with the network then they won't come. Other problems are possible, but trying a different network (Probably9857) is a useful experiment to run.

Probably9857 With everything set to push notifications, it makes no sense.
