am broadcast

I'm trying to send a broadcast message to an application when Syncthing finishes with a directory. It (Syncthing-fork) allows you to execute a shell script after a successful sync. In the past I would have used am broadcast to trigger the broadcast but from what I understand Graphene doesn't ship with that tool for security reasons.

Can anyone suggest an alternative method, or even how to install am?

I don't think using shell is necessary here. The app can already notify other apps by broadcasts when a folder changes state and completes, see https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android/blob/4152b7b0c9cbc99d0649da839021c128eae7a42f/app/src/main/java/com/nutomic/syncthingandroid/service/RestApi.java#L1104 . Apps that like to receive that info can be whitelisted there. 🙂

I'm not following you. Are you suggesting that I change the source code to Syncthing-android, adding the package ID for the app I want to notify? I'm guessing that I'm not understanding correctly. Perhaps there's a way to do this from the GUI?

I know I can update the target app so it listens to the broadcasts. Unfortunately I don't have the time to set up an Android development environment and work on the target app (Orgzly revived). Perhaps over the winter break though.

That's why I was looking for something I could just glue together until then.

pjones If you already send the broadcast from syncthing fork, maybe you can intercept ("hear") it with tasker and then execute an intent in the target app if it supports this kind of intent?

Tasker can do a lot of really weird stuff if you massage it right.

As soon the target app is ready, you can reach out to me to add its package id to Syncthing-Fork. It will then receive intent broadcasts about folder state. (No hurry , we can do that in winter 🙂.)

What is the exact "am broadcast..." command you are using? Maybe I can help here with a few lines of code? I see you already have a repo&release ready.🙋‍♂️

I guess you'd like to execute "sync_start" when Syncthing completed a folder?
