Play Services Asking Telephone Permission More Common

Recently I started getting a notification each time I open Curve (a finance app). The notification says that the apps I'm using needs Play Services to have permissions for Telephone. I didn't allow it permission and the app still works fine. Now this also started happening with Wise (another finance app). Does anyone know what's going on here, and if this will become an issue soon?

balint This also started happening for some of the banking apps that I use. They also started doing this about a year ago, then suddenly stopped after some weeks. I commented on this in the community chat rooms and got this reply from a GrapheneOS developer:

banking apps largely use a few SDKs and have similar policies so they make changes in bursts together

On stock PixelOS Play services have these permissions by default so apps naturally won't nag you about them.

balint I've had the same from Triodos and Currensea apps but none if my other banking apps. I've taken it up with Triodos for now as thats more vital for me and will report back what I hear.

For what it's worth the telephone permission doesn't always give your phone number out. It depends on how the SIM card is configured from my testing.

Resurrecting this thread as I am experiencing the same message when I open my Triodos bank app. I have used the app for around 3 weeks since installation with no error message until today.

The message informs me that "This app won't work properly unless you allow Google Play services' request to access the telephone"

From what I can tell, the app seems to be working despite the error message.

As I have the app only on my tablet, with no SIM, I am wondering what it will try and do if I allow this permission anyway. I guess I will have to experiment when and if it becomes necessary.
